5 Benefits of Journaling Despite the Busyness of Life

October 16, 2025 by Liz SanFilippo Hall

My very first diary, from fourth grade, was an American Girl-branded notebook that only provided a handful of lines to write about my day. A few decades later, I easily fill three to five-ish pages every day, even though I only spend about 15 minutes a day journaling. It’s a practice that has gotten me through life in more ways than one.  When I don’t know what to think about a situation? I … [Read more...]

Oops, Daisies, and Plot Twists: My Life as a Writer

October 2, 2025 by Liz SanFilippo Hall

Oops, Daisies, and Plot Twists

I’ve wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest childhood memories is of me, sitting at a desk in my third-grade classroom, flipping through a hardcover encyclopedia for the letter ‘S,’ because I wanted to research the sun for a short story I was working on. I’d even asked my teacher, Mrs. Engle, to let me stay inside during recess so I could work.  Despite the … [Read more...]

Letter to My Son as He Kicks Off Travel Soccer

Letter to my son as he starts travel soccer

Hey there, Buster,  I’m going to be honest: this is brand-new territory for me. It’s no secret that I was never very athletic as a kid or, frankly, ever… unless we’re playing catch, and then I can catch just about anything you throw near me. To top it off, your sister’s sports are ones I’m familiar with: softball and gymnastics. But soccer? And a travel team no less?  Like I said: Brand. … [Read more...]

Letter to My Daughter as She Starts Middle School

August 29, 2025 by Liz SanFilippo Hall

Letter to my daughter as she starts middle school

My darling daughter,  Here we go again, hurtling toward another milestone: you’re in middle school!  Throughout fifth grade, there was so much anticipation, so many questions, so many concerns (that you mostly shared between your friends) about what to expect. Your elementary school did a fabulous job of preparing you for this transition, but I wanted to emphasize, even though I’m sure … [Read more...]

My Favorite Books about Books and Writing

August 1, 2025 by Liz SanFilippo Hall

Favorite books about books and writing

If you know me at all, it’s no secret that I love to read. When someone asks me what I’m currently reading, I often list a handful of titles… because what I pick up depends on the time of day and my mood. But one thing I will always adore: books about books/writing or set in book-ish settings, like bookstores and libraries. Here are just some of my favorite reads about books and … [Read more...]

When I was a young mom, my dreams of writing felt When I was a young mom, my dreams of writing felt so out of reach. I was being pulled in a million different directions, and I never thought I’d make the progress I needed to. But then I realized that I just needed to reassess my process (and give myself some grace). Gone were the days of immersing myself in my imagination for hours on end… but 5-10 minute writing sessions? That I could do. This guided journal was born out of that process. Grab this 28-day guided journal through the link in my bio 🥰#MomLife #WritingProcess #WritingDreams #GuidedJournal

I actually started in on this book last fall, so I’m about halfway into my “draft zero” already… 40,000ish words that includes a handful of chapters and a whole lot of outlining and world building. I’m having fun figuring out how this story pans out, and that’s basically all I can say without spoiling anything 😜#AmEditing #AmWriting #MomLife #DraftZero

Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy is entertaining and insightful, and his approach to creativity feels like my own (did I really just write that?! I’m not, I swear, comparing myself to his incredible songwriting abilities). But his words struck a chord with me (pun intended): “Take the time to play with your words. Allow yourself the joy of getting to know them without being precious about directing everything they are trying to say.”But he goes beyond inspiration and encouragement too, and offers some super fun writing exercises… l you’ll just have to read to find them out. 🥳Now please excuse me while I go check out his other book. #AmWriting #BookRec #Creativity #Wilco
