When I think of all there is to learn and discover, all the people I have yet to meet, I’m simply OVERWHELMED. So when my kids complain of being bored, I try not to guide them…
I want them to ask questions and go searching for either something to do, learn, explore, see, create, etc., without, no offense, Google.
But I used to think I needed to give them “more tools” so they could handle or manage their boredom (see my old posts on “The Power of Boredom,” this “Gift Guide” to spur learning and exploration, and “5 Activities to Keep Young Kids Entertained”… clearly, my kids think they’re bored a lot).
Okay, yeah, I still tend to list off dozens of things they can do in hopes one of them will spark a look of “Ooh, I have an idea.”
But I have also been known, at least lately, to look my kids straight in the eye after they tell me they’re bored and tell them…
“Congrats! What a perfect time to use your imagination.”
Note: this rarely works. But, hey, at least I’m trying.
