In Praise of Slowing Down

December 12, 2018 by Liz SanFilippo Hall

slowing down with a hike

Confession time. I’m addicted to being busy. Slowing down? It's not my forte. Over my handful of decades on this earth, I’ve had to force myself more than once to quit a few things, because I’d taken on far too much. I’ve had problems saying “no” to things people asked me to do. Now, as a mom, I find myself filling our calendar with classes, “field trips” to the library and park, and play … [Read more...]

4 Holiday Gift Ideas for Busy Moms

When someone asks me what I want for the holidays, it takes me awhile to come up with things. When I do have a “list” to share, it tends to be really practical stuff: socks, clothes, things to help me organize. This year, with buying a house and finishing renovations, I literally asked my mom for curtains. So what do we moms really want? Trust me when I say we’ll be super appreciative of … [Read more...]

Work From Home Mom Challenges, But 5 Reasons It’s Worth Every Second

September 29, 2018 by Liz SanFilippo Hall

Working from home isn’t at all what I expected it to be. Before I had my first, I thought, naively, oh, since I’ll be home, I’ll have SO much time to get things done! My daughter will sleep or play, while I do work, and the house will always be clean. HA! That was definitely a ‘pre-kid’ mindset. I had no conception of how life (and work) would change so drastically once our family grew. And if … [Read more...]

5 Tips for Breaking Habits and Making New Ones

July 27, 2018 by Liz SanFilippo Hall

old habits

Habits are crazy things. Sometimes we create them without even meaning to, and when we go attempt to change them? It can be really, really hard to get out of our old ‘auto-pilot’ setting and into a new one. Take for example, our old dishwasher. Yes, I said dishwasher. In our apartment, the dishwasher’s top drawer only came out halfway. It was a pain in the arse, but we lived with it for five … [Read more...]

What 2017 Taught Me About Life

January 1, 2018 by Liz SanFilippo Hall

This was going to be a recap of my year in 2017. A recap of the year shouldn’t be that hard, right? Except it’s been a bit hard to write. In fact, I’ve been trying to write this post almost all of December. The problem: I kept trying to focus on all the things I accomplished this year, both professionally and personally… and it just didn’t feel right. The reason I finally realized? I can’t just … [Read more...]

What will my creativity process be like this summe What will my creativity process be like this summer? How much writing will I get done? I have no idea! In my latest Substack, I share how I’m trying to embrace @marieforleo’s mantra of how everything is “figureoutable.” For the full post, hop on over to my Substack!#SummerLiving #MomLife #WritingLife

When I was a young mom, my dreams of writing felt When I was a young mom, my dreams of writing felt so out of reach. I was being pulled in a million different directions, and I never thought I’d make the progress I needed to. But then I realized that I just needed to reassess my process (and give myself some grace). Gone were the days of immersing myself in my imagination for hours on end… but 5-10 minute writing sessions? That I could do. This guided journal was born out of that process. Grab this 28-day guided journal through the link in my bio 🥰#MomLife #WritingProcess #WritingDreams #GuidedJournal

I actually started in on this book last fall, so I’m about halfway into my “draft zero” already… 40,000ish words that includes a handful of chapters and a whole lot of outlining and world building. I’m having fun figuring out how this story pans out, and that’s basically all I can say without spoiling anything 😜#AmEditing #AmWriting #MomLife #DraftZero

Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy is entertaining and insightful, and his approach to creativity feels like my own (did I really just write that?! I’m not, I swear, comparing myself to his incredible songwriting abilities). But his words struck a chord with me (pun intended): “Take the time to play with your words. Allow yourself the joy of getting to know them without being precious about directing everything they are trying to say.”But he goes beyond inspiration and encouragement too, and offers some super fun writing exercises… l you’ll just have to read to find them out. 🥳Now please excuse me while I go check out his other book. #AmWriting #BookRec #Creativity #Wilco
