4 Holiday Gift Ideas for Busy Moms

November 20, 2018 by Liz SanFilippo Hall

When someone asks me what I want for the holidays, it takes me awhile to come up with things. When I do have a “list” to share, it tends to be really practical stuff: socks, clothes, things to help me organize. This year, with buying a house and finishing renovations, I literally asked my mom for curtains.

So what do we moms really want? Trust me when I say we’ll be super appreciative of practical things; after all, we love getting things that are useful. But if you want to go above and beyond, keep reading.

Affiliate links included.

I polled some of my mama friends on Facebook to find out what they ask for. Everyone had different answers… some asked for practical items, others (admittedly) said they were dreaming big. But nearly every gift idea they offered up fell into one of these categories.

4 Holiday Gift Ideas for Busy Moms

Practical Things

Okay, okay, I already mentioned this. But I can’t stress it enough. A lot of us mamas would be thrilled with something practical, and yes, that includes socks (especially comfy fuzzy ones), bed sheets, a planner, bath towels, a vacuum, and shoes. No, I’m not kidding. These items were mentioned the most frequently in my very informal poll.

Hobby Gift Ideas

Us moms like to joke that we don’t have any hobbies anymore since having kids, other than, I don’t know, going to the bathroom alone. But you know what? We miss our hobbies. And as our kids get older, we try to get back to them…and a holiday gift can go a long way in helping us do just that.

For me, it’s reading and writing, and this Christmas I asked for The Artist’s Way for Parents (I did the Artist’s Way pre-kids and, if you’re looking to up your creativity in whatever line of business you’re in, I recommend that as well). If the busy mom in your life enjoys reading, like I do, this comfy reading pillow is welcome, too. For the active mama? Workout clothes and a Fitbit top the list. Does she like to sew? Get her some supplies. Loves to cook? Kitchen gadgets on sale for the win. So pick a hobby she loves (or misses) and find something to go with it; she’ll love it.

When it comes to our kids, we know exactly what to get them… need ideas for the busy moms in your lives? Here are some of the things we wouldn’t mind wrapped under the tree this year.

Experiences and Pampering

Sometimes we just need a break, so why yes, we’ll take a hotel stay for just a night or two away. Alternatively, my mom loves getting my family and I “experiences” so often it’ll be a membership to a place that we like to go to as a family, like the zoo or arboretum. Other experience gift ideas that we’d love include movie or theater tickets.

You also can’t go wrong with pampering experiences: gift certificates for massages, spa visits, pedicures, manicures. You name the relaxing experience, and we’ll take it.

Items She Won’t Buy Herself

One mama in my poll said it best, “I ask for all the things I don’t necessarily need but wouldn’t bother buying myself if that makes sense.” Lotsa mamas agreed with this idea. We rarely ask for big-ticket items, but come the holidays (or our birthdays), we won’t say no to something that we’ve dreamed of getting, whether it be an Apple Watch or Neck and Back Massagers.

Still not sure what to get? When in doubt, grab a gift card. Trust me, we’ll put it to good use.

“Write what you know.” Over the years, I hear “Write what you know.” Over the years, I heard this repeatedly in writing classes/workshops, and I thought I understood it, but I didn’t, not really. Here’s what I learned, and why I vote we change the advice. #WritingAdvice #WritingCoach #WritingLife #Creativity #MomLife #Journaling
When do you set aside time for writing? (Not work- When do you set aside time for writing? (Not work-related, but for a creative project, whether it’s for fun or eventual publication).I bookend my days with my creative writing. After the kids are off to school, I take 15-30 minutes to journal and/or work on my latest WIP. This is almost always on the computer.Once the kids are in bed and after I’ve had time to decompress, I pick up a pen and write for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. This is usually in my journal, but sometimes it’s on a printed version of my WIP.I know this schedule won’t work for everyone, but as someone who works from home, it’s helped me keep my creative writing from falling to the wayside due to other work and life priorities.Plus, I like to believe that my brain keeps working on my WIPs while I sleep, when I work on my writing before I go to bed. 🙂Sometimes I write terribly.Sometimes I can’t think of the right word. But sometimes the words flow, and then it feels a bit like magic.Earlier this year, I made a commitment to myself to prioritize my creative writing the same way I prioritize doctors’ appointments and other ‘non-negotiables.’Have I missed days? Naturally. Life happens. But this structure - this dedication to showing up to the page - has helped me in countless ways, and I’ve made more progress with my creative writing than I have in YEARS.Looking for some accountability with your own creative writing?I have two FREE options for creative writing accountability in the new year. Writers, what memories do you have of your first “real” writing workshop (outside of the usual school day)? I was in middle school. My mom signed me up for a workshop organized by the local arts council. I figured it would be like my third-grade ‘writing workshop,’ but then I learned it was led by a published author—a real, live author. It felt surreal to me: to be learning from someone who had actually published a book. In addition to teaching us how to develop our characters, he read our work and gave us feedback. It was at once terrifying and exhilarating all at once. Thankfully, he focused on giving constructive criticism, and I walked away energized and motivated. It’s a feeling I’ve felt many times over the years after a solid writing workshop, and it’s the reason why I love being part of a community of writers, no matter where I live.#WritingLife #LizsWritingJourney #WritingWorkshop #LearningToTellStories
I may have written this six years ago, but I think I may have written this six years ago, but I think it’s a reminder worth repeating, especially in this crazy busy holiday season. #MomLife #LetsChooseImperfection #LifeWithKids #AmWriting

I wasn’t a fan of the painting/drawing that I di I wasn’t a fan of the painting/drawing that I did… so I wrote a poem over it. 💖This one will probably stay in my watercolor pad but that’s ok! I don’t *need* to do anything with my art… for me it’s about the process. (And lemme tell you, there’s a LOT of my art you haven’t seen!)She looked to the skyShe let her words float away. I’ve always loved to write. But when I had kids? I’ve always loved to write. But when I had kids? I no longer had hours upon hours to immerse myself in different worlds. Still, I did my darndest to find small blocks of time to journal, to muse, to think through my ideas… here I share one of my old journal entries, which, even years later, I find encouraging and a reminder of what writing means to me. (Please note… I don’t share my kids’ names publicly! Hence the redaction). * #NotesFromMyPastSelf… in which I read old journal entries and share some wisdom from my younger self. Because, surprisingly to me, I had some words of wisdom even when I was sleep deprived with my younger kids. #WritingCommunity #MomLife #Journal #MoreThanMom
