Give Yourself Permission to Take a Break (When Necessary)

August 18, 2015 by lizsfhall@gmail.com

If there’s a cardinal rule to blogging it’s simple: be consistent and post frequently. I’m still working on my blogging frequency, but — and I recommend this to anyone who has a blog — create a schedule or editorial calendar and stick to it. Except when you can’t. Because, you know, life happens. And sometimes it’s ok to just ‘take a break.’ (Even when you’re just starting out, like me).

Before I launched this blog I had a series of milestones I wanted to hit. But then life happened (and I took time for family), and then work stuff happened, and then I went on a planned-long-ago much-needed vacation. And before you know it, while I got some stuff done in between, I missed a few blog posts I intended to write/do. I am NOT going to make a habit of that, I promise, and it’s not something I normally advocate. After all, consistency matters! As any blogger or social media manager knows: work ahead of schedule so stuff like this can be avoided.

That said, after a fabulous weekend up in my happy place — Northern Michigan — I caught a vicious head cold. It was the worst on the day we returned home (blessing, I suppose?) but the 6+ hour car ride home was the opposite of pleasant. And when I got home? All the plans I had to get caught up on stuff fell on the backburner.

As they say: shit happens.

And sometimes you just need to take care of yourself first. So that’s what I did. In return, I feel, I experienced the shortest cold I’ve had in my LIFE. No joke. 2ish days? I’m okay with that.

I’m feeling like myself again, and the fact I let myself take a break? (And okay, okay, my husband reminding me to take it easy?) That can make all the difference in the world. It’s also part of this whole ‘work, life, harmony’ concept. When everything you do is in harmony, things just have a way of falling into place… even when you give yourself permission to take that break. (Because if you think you need that break? Chances are that’s exactly what you need to do). You never know; you might come back with even bigger and better ideas than before (I know I did… stay tuned).
