Holiday Gift Guide: Gift Ideas for Mom

November 18, 2019 by Liz SanFilippo Hall

After I became a mom — or maybe it’s just a part of “growing up” — when someone asked me what I wanted for my birthday or the holidays, I had a standard gift list. I typically asked for things I tended to need, like clothes, socks, underwear — and last year even curtains — rather than things I wanted.

If you’re looking for something a bit more, shall we say, creative and thoughtful when shopping for mom? Then this holiday gift guide is for you. Here are some of my latest favorite finds for moms; some are related to self care and some are from small business owners. Happy shopping!

(This post is an update to last year’s gift guide; Some affiliate links included).

Bath and Spa Goodies
Self care often falls down our lists, but when mama takes care of herself, she’s better able to take care of others, and there are oh so many ways to pamper mom for the holidays, starting with some goodies to help her relax.

Bath bombsHelp her get into the right mindset for relaxation with some flameless candles and continue that pampering with a facial mask — like my favorite exfoliating one — from Younique.

Other favorite self care gifts:

Splash offers whimsical bath bombs and soaps, like mermaids and unicorn poop. The best bang for your buck are their subscription boxes; every month your mom will receive a fabulous set of six to eight full-sized bath goodies valued at more than $50, but costing far less.

Love BotanicsLove Botanics produces small batch, artisanal skincare products using raw botanic ingredients, and organic and wild harvested ingredients when possible. Some of their extra-special products include their body polish, which not only exfoliates and enhances circulation but also does double duty as it turns into a lotion; and the sensual body oil made out of essential natural oils also cares for dry Winter skin. Orders can be placed over their Facebook page.

Since there is no such thing as too much pampering and relaxation time, gift cards for things like massages, manis, and pedis are always welcome. Or grab her some Color Street, the mani that lasts that she can do at home.

Coloring page downloadFor more at-home pampering, a neck and back massager like this one is a gift that keeps on giving. Last but certainly not least, the ultimate in pampering is the gift of a night away at a hotel… bonus: she can bring any of the above gifts with her!

Custom shirtsPersonalized Goodies
Customize shirts, tumblers, you name it. Fabrycated offers custom decal orders, and the shop owner, Lisa Fabry, has plenty of options so you can pick just the thing that your mom loves. Harry Potter? Check. Super Mario? Check again. See all her offerings over on her Etsy shop.

Small biz owner Brittany Latoria also customizes items, including personalized ornaments, water bottles, and travel mugs. She also offers some really cute handmade jewelry. You can find a handful of her offerings over at PB+J Crafts.

Custom artworkCustom Artwork
For a completely unique gift, order a custom piece of artwork. Artist Maggie SanFilippo (full disclosure, my talented sister) creates commissioned pieces, including drawings and paintings. You can see a sample of her work and style over on her site magzmarz.com. All orders must be placed by 12/8.

Show Her How You Feel
I love it when my little kids tell me how much they “wuv” me, and I’m guessing I’ll love to hear it in other ways as they get older too. This Fill in the Love book literally helps you share your love, and this beautiful decorative ring dish will always remind her of how you feel with a sweet quote.

Cozy Gifts
Once the kids are in bed, one of my favorite things to do is cozy up on the couch and watch my shows (and let’s be honest, write, too). Some of my favorite cozy items include socks that say, “If you can read this, bring me some wine” as well as this comfy wearable blanket and shawl.

What I Love About MomGifts that Encourage her Hobbies
When I first became a parent, my hobbies took a backseat to my kids. Hobbies, what are those? But as my kids grow, I’ve been refinding them… and a gift can go a long way in encouraging your mama to rediscover some of her favorite things, whether it be knitting, drawing (I’ve had fun with these glitter pens), running, crafting, or whatever her hobby may be!

Is reading one of her hobbies? I highly recommend “The Beautiful No: And Other Tales of Trials, Transcendence, and Transformation” by former Oprah producer Shari Salata; bonus, it’s also a bit of a guide in rediscovering your passions too.

I hope this holiday gift guide, packed with gift ideas for moms, helped with your holiday shopping. Happy holidays!

I found my new favorite holiday outfit! 🤣 #Hap I found my new favorite holiday outfit! 🤣#HappyHolidays #WritingInspiration
“Write what you know.” Over the years, I hear “Write what you know.” Over the years, I heard this repeatedly in writing classes/workshops, and I thought I understood it, but I didn’t, not really. Here’s what I learned, and why I vote we change the advice. #WritingAdvice #WritingCoach #WritingLife #Creativity #MomLife #Journaling
When do you set aside time for writing? (Not work- When do you set aside time for writing? (Not work-related, but for a creative project, whether it’s for fun or eventual publication).I bookend my days with my creative writing. After the kids are off to school, I take 15-30 minutes to journal and/or work on my latest WIP. This is almost always on the computer.Once the kids are in bed and after I’ve had time to decompress, I pick up a pen and write for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. This is usually in my journal, but sometimes it’s on a printed version of my WIP.I know this schedule won’t work for everyone, but as someone who works from home, it’s helped me keep my creative writing from falling to the wayside due to other work and life priorities.Plus, I like to believe that my brain keeps working on my WIPs while I sleep, when I work on my writing before I go to bed. 🙂Sometimes I write terribly.Sometimes I can’t think of the right word. But sometimes the words flow, and then it feels a bit like magic.Earlier this year, I made a commitment to myself to prioritize my creative writing the same way I prioritize doctors’ appointments and other ‘non-negotiables.’Have I missed days? Naturally. Life happens. But this structure - this dedication to showing up to the page - has helped me in countless ways, and I’ve made more progress with my creative writing than I have in YEARS.Looking for some accountability with your own creative writing?I have two FREE options for creative writing accountability in the new year. Shoot me a DM and I’ll share the details 😉#WritingCommunity #Creativity #MomLife #AmWriting
Writers, what memories do you have of your first “real” writing workshop (outside of the usual school day)? I was in middle school. My mom signed me up for a workshop organized by the local arts council. I figured it would be like my third-grade ‘writing workshop,’ but then I learned it was led by a published author—a real, live author. It felt surreal to me: to be learning from someone who had actually published a book. In addition to teaching us how to develop our characters, he read our work and gave us feedback. It was at once terrifying and exhilarating all at once. Thankfully, he focused on giving constructive criticism, and I walked away energized and motivated. It’s a feeling I’ve felt many times over the years after a solid writing workshop, and it’s the reason why I love being part of a community of writers, no matter where I live.#WritingLife #LizsWritingJourney #WritingWorkshop #LearningToTellStories
I may have written this six years ago, but I think I may have written this six years ago, but I think it’s a reminder worth repeating, especially in this crazy busy holiday season. #MomLife #LetsChooseImperfection #LifeWithKids #AmWriting
I ceded control of decorating the tree this year a I ceded control of decorating the tree this year and TBH, I’m much happier because of it 🤣#MomLife #MerryChristmas
I wasn’t a fan of the painting/drawing that I di I wasn’t a fan of the painting/drawing that I did… so I wrote a poem over it. 💖This one will probably stay in my watercolor pad but that’s ok! I don’t *need* to do anything with my art… for me it’s about the process. (And lemme tell you, there’s a LOT of my art you haven’t seen!)She looked to the skyShe let her words float away. But then she wonderedwhat would happen instead…if she wrote them on the sky. #Art #Creativity #Poem #CreationProcess #MomLife
I’ve always loved to write. But when I had kids? I’ve always loved to write. But when I had kids? I no longer had hours upon hours to immerse myself in different worlds. Still, I did my darndest to find small blocks of time to journal, to muse, to think through my ideas… here I share one of my old journal entries, which, even years later, I find encouraging and a reminder of what writing means to me. (Please note… I don’t share my kids’ names publicly! Hence the redaction). * #NotesFromMyPastSelf… in which I read old journal entries and share some wisdom from my younger self. Because, surprisingly to me, I had some words of wisdom even when I was sleep deprived with my younger kids. #WritingCommunity #MomLife #Journal #MoreThanMom
✨ It’s officially here! ✨ Between caregiving ✨ It’s officially here! ✨Between caregiving, chores, and work… I kept putting myself and my writing last.
