6 Awesome Craft Kits Kids Love From Oriental Trading

March 31, 2020 by Liz SanFilippo Hall

We have a wee bit of an obsession with art and crafts in our house. As in, my kids are constantly creating. While they often do things from “scratch,” I also like to have a handful of craft kits on hand that make it easy to keep them entertained and occupied for at least a half hour. (Affiliate links included).

This is, honestly, one of the reasons I’m obsessed with Oriental Trading. We always have a solid supply of craft supplies from them. Those supplies include wonderful craft kits that are both easy to use and highly creative. My almost 6-year-old in particular is obsessed with them. Bonus: most come in sets of at least 12 so there’s plenty of them to make. Here, in no particular order, are some of our personal favs:

Oriental Trading

Easter Egg Craft Kits

Who needs real eggs to decorate? This craft (and this one too) is fun, because it uses self-adhesive foam pieces. The kiddos can choose to follow the directions, or do as my toddler does and just apply them in whatever crazy design they wants.

Jewelry Kits

My oldest adores jewelry kits. With each package packed with beads (and sometimes charms, like this one), it’s also great practice with fine-motor skills.

Crafts with kids

Ornaments

With younger kids, we tend to pick the easy sticker crafts, and there are SO many different ornaments to make with the foam stickers, like this snowflake craft kit. And yes, we’ve made them in seasons other than Winter too.

Sticker Scenes

Hands down, our favorite craft kits are the sticker scenes, like this one and this one. My Kindergartener and preschooler both love them, in part because they still have the freedom to create whatever scene they want.

Scratch Wands

Scratch art is like magic! The kids scratch the black top layer off to reveal vibrant colors underneath. Our favs: the magic wands.

Unicorn mask

Mask Craft Kit

Dressing up in costumes is a favorite play time activity around here, and that’s one reason the kids love new masks to not only design but play with as well. My daughter’s favorite: unicorn masks!

While the craft kits making creative time easy and fun, I’m also a huge fan of just giving my kids craft supplies — such as construction paper, popsicle sticks, and pipe cleaners — and letting them explore their creative side. Go forth and create!

Just an imperfect mom trying to inspire and support women who want to write and create 👇

The number one thing I keep hearing from my fellow The number one thing I keep hearing from my fellow creative writers… they want accountability when it comes to moving forward with their writing goals/plans.I’m the same exact way!Self-imposed deadlines? Eh, they work sometimes, but I often find myself moving the goal post, if I can.Goals/plans I share with an accountability partner? I hit them nearly 100% of the time. When I don’t, it’s usually because my project took an unexpected (but lovely) turn.Earlier this year, I joined a free accountability group run by fellow freelancer Sam Hindman, and it made a world of difference in the tasks I kept putting off.So why not have an accountability group focused on creative writing?!Starting January 8th, that’s exactly what I’m doing.Every Thursday, starting at 10:30 am Central, we’ll get our butts in the chair for one hour and work on our creative writing projects simultaneously.Interested in joining this FREE one-hour accountability group? Say ME below, or shoot me a message. Let’s kick off the year by making progress on our creative writing!#WritingCommunity #MomLife #WritingGoals

“Write what you know.” Over the years, I hear “Write what you know.” Over the years, I heard this repeatedly in writing classes/workshops, and I thought I understood it, but I didn’t, not really. Here’s what I learned, and why I vote we change the advice. #WritingAdvice #WritingCoach #WritingLife #Creativity #MomLife #Journaling
When do you set aside time for writing? (Not work- When do you set aside time for writing? (Not work-related, but for a creative project, whether it’s for fun or eventual publication).I bookend my days with my creative writing. After the kids are off to school, I take 15-30 minutes to journal and/or work on my latest WIP. This is almost always on the computer.Once the kids are in bed and after I’ve had time to decompress, I pick up a pen and write for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. This is usually in my journal, but sometimes it’s on a printed version of my WIP.I know this schedule won’t work for everyone, but as someone who works from home, it’s helped me keep my creative writing from falling to the wayside due to other work and life priorities.Plus, I like to believe that my brain keeps working on my WIPs while I sleep, when I work on my writing before I go to bed. 🙂Sometimes I write terribly.Sometimes I can’t think of the right word. But sometimes the words flow, and then it feels a bit like magic.Earlier this year, I made a commitment to myself to prioritize my creative writing the same way I prioritize doctors’ appointments and other ‘non-negotiables.’Have I missed days? Naturally. Life happens. But this structure - this dedication to showing up to the page - has helped me in countless ways, and I’ve made more progress with my creative writing than I have in YEARS.Looking for some accountability with your own creative writing?I have two FREE options for creative writing accountability in the new year. Shoot me a DM and I’ll share the details 😉#WritingCommunity #Creativity #MomLife #AmWriting
Writers, what memories do you have of your first “real” writing workshop (outside of the usual school day)? I was in middle school. My mom signed me up for a workshop organized by the local arts council. I figured it would be like my third-grade ‘writing workshop,’ but then I learned it was led by a published author—a real, live author. It felt surreal to me: to be learning from someone who had actually published a book. In addition to teaching us how to develop our characters, he read our work and gave us feedback. It was at once terrifying and exhilarating all at once. Thankfully, he focused on giving constructive criticism, and I walked away energized and motivated. It’s a feeling I’ve felt many times over the years after a solid writing workshop, and it’s the reason why I love being part of a community of writers, no matter where I live.#WritingLife #LizsWritingJourney #WritingWorkshop #LearningToTellStories
