5 Activities To Keep Young Kids Entertained So You Can Get Stuff Done (No Pinterest Skills Required)

May 16, 2018 by Liz SanFilippo Hall

My work at home “schedule” typically means working during quiet/nap time and after bed, but since I’m spending my kids’ sleep times working, it doesn’t leave much time for other things like laundry, dishes, and getting other household stuff done.

Sure, the kids can “help” out even at their age, kind of. Buster has gotten pretty good at handing me all the utensils from the dishwasher. Little Miss likes to race me when we vaccuum. That said, sometimes it’s better — or at least more productive — to entertain the kids so I can get some other stuff done around the apartment, or pack boxes for the big move or sometimes check email. Or, okay, check Facebook or Instagram.

Activities to Keep Young Kids Entertained

When books or playing make believe with the couch cushions or kitchen utensils isn’t enough (or you’re just tired of hearing “I’m bored!”), here are some of my go-to things and activities for my two young kiddos. Full disclosure, Dollar Store knows and love me… and so does Amazon Prime. Because, I’ll be completely honest and real here: I am not a crafty Pinterest mom. I’m all about keeping it simple.

Arts and Crafts

It’s amazing how much fun some construction paper, cotton balls, and markers can be. Dollar Tree makes this easy since they have so many supplies, many seasonal based for holiday crafts. But I’m also obsessed with these dot markers. Not only are they washable so even little guy can play with them now, but you really have to press it the right way to make a mess. Less mess to clean up afterwards? Total win in my book!

To make crafting even more fun, we’ve also started to read books and then create a craft (or drawing) around the book. Little Miss’s favorite lately is reading Clever Jack Takes the Cake, and then making her own cake out of construction paper. Win for mom? I just need to cut a circle from construction paper, and maybe a few other shapes for her to glue on.

Playdough

Okay, okay, I just said less mess is best, and I KNOW some other mamas hate playdough with a vengeance. But hear me out on this. Playdough can often keep little miss entertained for an hour. An HOUR. That’s gold in my book! She has all sorts of cut outs and playdough toys, so she’ll often “bake” things to serve to her characters. I love hearing her imagination at work! This is one of my favorite quiet time activities… and hers, too!

Activity books

I’m talking about more than coloring books… some of Little Miss’s current favorites are the dry erase activity books that we get from Usborne. She learns to write her letters or numbers, or heck even learns how to trace dinosaurs, and she has a blast doing it. Another easy clean up… well, other than when little guy participates (and decides to draw on the table, too).

Sticker books are our other favorite. Buster has discovered the joy of putting stickers all over me, while Little Miss is regularly in awe of her 600 sticker Disney princess book. The reusable sticker books are also pretty cool, especially with how it encourages the kiddo’s imagination. Little Miss regularly tells me stories about what’s going on with her fairy and princess stickers.

Building Blocks

I have a love/hate relationship with Duplos and Legos. They create such a mess, but the kids adore building things. Little Miss will create the houses and towers… and Buster is great at taking them all down. And, at his age (just over 1 now), he’s also discovered the joy of putting them back in the bag! For less of a mess, if only because they stick together, go for Picasso Tiles. Little Miss has come up with some creative towers lately and learned a whole lot about construction; they’re great STEM toys.

Water Toys

Warm weather is back – woohoo! With our new house and yard, I plan to be outside as much as possible. I’ll get the kids involved with gardening with me, but I’ll also have their favorite water toys out, including this fabulous water table that keeps them (and heck even the dog) entertained for hours.

And okay, I won’t lie… when it comes to quiet time with Little Miss while Buster takes his one nap? Netflix is my friend, too.

“Write what you know.” Over the years, I hear “Write what you know.” Over the years, I heard this repeatedly in writing classes/workshops, and I thought I understood it, but I didn’t, not really. Here’s what I learned, and why I vote we change the advice. #WritingAdvice #WritingCoach #WritingLife #Creativity #MomLife #Journaling
When do you set aside time for writing? (Not work- When do you set aside time for writing? (Not work-related, but for a creative project, whether it’s for fun or eventual publication).I bookend my days with my creative writing. After the kids are off to school, I take 15-30 minutes to journal and/or work on my latest WIP. This is almost always on the computer.Once the kids are in bed and after I’ve had time to decompress, I pick up a pen and write for anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour. This is usually in my journal, but sometimes it’s on a printed version of my WIP.I know this schedule won’t work for everyone, but as someone who works from home, it’s helped me keep my creative writing from falling to the wayside due to other work and life priorities.Plus, I like to believe that my brain keeps working on my WIPs while I sleep, when I work on my writing before I go to bed. 🙂Sometimes I write terribly.Sometimes I can’t think of the right word. But sometimes the words flow, and then it feels a bit like magic.Earlier this year, I made a commitment to myself to prioritize my creative writing the same way I prioritize doctors’ appointments and other ‘non-negotiables.’Have I missed days? Naturally. Life happens. But this structure - this dedication to showing up to the page - has helped me in countless ways, and I’ve made more progress with my creative writing than I have in YEARS.Looking for some accountability with your own creative writing?I have two FREE options for creative writing accountability in the new year. Writers, what memories do you have of your first “real” writing workshop (outside of the usual school day)? I was in middle school. My mom signed me up for a workshop organized by the local arts council. I figured it would be like my third-grade ‘writing workshop,’ but then I learned it was led by a published author—a real, live author. It felt surreal to me: to be learning from someone who had actually published a book. In addition to teaching us how to develop our characters, he read our work and gave us feedback. It was at once terrifying and exhilarating all at once. Thankfully, he focused on giving constructive criticism, and I walked away energized and motivated. It’s a feeling I’ve felt many times over the years after a solid writing workshop, and it’s the reason why I love being part of a community of writers, no matter where I live.#WritingLife #LizsWritingJourney #WritingWorkshop #LearningToTellStories
I may have written this six years ago, but I think I may have written this six years ago, but I think it’s a reminder worth repeating, especially in this crazy busy holiday season. #MomLife #LetsChooseImperfection #LifeWithKids #AmWriting
I ceded control of decorating the tree this year a I ceded control of decorating the tree this year and TBH, I’m much happier because of it 🤣#MomLife #MerryChristmas
I wasn’t a fan of the painting/drawing that I di I wasn’t a fan of the painting/drawing that I did… so I wrote a poem over it. 💖This one will probably stay in my watercolor pad but that’s ok! I don’t *need* to do anything with my art… for me it’s about the process. (And lemme tell you, there’s a LOT of my art you haven’t seen!)She looked to the skyShe let her words float away. But then she wonderedwhat would happen instead…if she wrote them on the sky. #Art #Creativity #Poem #CreationProcess #MomLife
I’ve always loved to write. But when I had kids? I’ve always loved to write. But when I had kids? I no longer had hours upon hours to immerse myself in different worlds. Still, I did my darndest to find small blocks of time to journal, to muse, to think through my ideas… here I share one of my old journal entries, which, even years later, I find encouraging and a reminder of what writing means to me. (Please note… I don’t share my kids’ names publicly! Hence the redaction). * #NotesFromMyPastSelf… in which I read old journal entries and share some wisdom from my younger self. Because, surprisingly to me, I had some words of wisdom even when I was sleep deprived with my younger kids. #WritingCommunity #MomLife #Journal #MoreThanMom
✨ It’s officially here! ✨ Between caregiving ✨ It’s officially here! ✨Between caregiving, chores, and work… I kept putting myself and my writing last.
