My Happy Place: Northern Michigan

August 12, 2015 by Liz SanFilippo Hall

Happy Place

Home is where the heart is. While I love living in Chicago, there is absolutely no place I'd rather be than Northern Michigan. Lucky for me, I married into a family that feels much the same way; this part of the world isn't just my 'happy place.' I've been coming up to the area as long as I can remember. Back then, there were hardly any tourists. I spent hours on the beach reading books (oh so … [Read more...]

Welcome to my Oops and Daisies blog

August 4, 2015 by Liz SanFilippo Hall

Why do you do what you do?

I love being inspired. Lucky for me, a lot inspires me: traveling, food, people, a good book… really anything with a history. An ability to tell a story. Our stories, the ones we share and the ones we prefer to keep to ourselves, are full of downs (‘oops’) and ups (‘daisies’.) But it’s the stories we’re willing to share, the stories that need to be told, that will help us live the best life … [Read more...]

A Tribute to my Grandma SanFilippo

August 1, 2015 by Liz SanFilippo Hall

Grandma SanFilippo

I never intended for this to be my first post on my new blog. But my Grandma SanFilippo has been on my mind more than anything these last few days, ever since I heard news of her death -- at age 91 -- this past Tuesday night. This blog is largely about the things that inspire not only me, but the people around me... and my Grandma? She inspired a lot of people. She taught me, our huge amazing … [Read more...]

Multi-genre author. 📚BECOMING CHARLOTTE CORDAY, a YA historical fantasy coming 4/27/2027 from Apprentice House Press

“Are you really writing a book??” That’s what a n “Are you really writing a book??”That’s what a nine-year-old asked me today after I read to my son’s 4th-grade class (not my picture book pictured here). She was in total awe. It made me think of my younger self: how determined I was to become an author one day. It’s all I ever really wanted for my “career.”She asked me a few questions, and when I told her my latest book was for “teens,” she looked crestfallen… I reminded her she could totally read my young adult historical fantasy when she was a bit older… But what a great reminder: share your dreams out loud. Share what you’re doing and creating. You never know who is watching, or who you’ll inspire.#DreamBig #WritingIsLife #ComingOfAgeBooks #AuthorsOfInsta
The idea for this space lived in my head for way t The idea for this space lived in my head for way too long (hey, kinda like some of my book ideas!) While this space is still taking shape and will evolve with the needs of people who want to “reclaim” their writing and creativity, we have some pretty cool stuff to kick things off. If you’re a woman who:* holds a desire to create (whether with words or some other art form)* struggles to carve out time and space for your hobbies and interests* wants to rediscover yourself through the act of creating* is ready to make progress with your creative projects* doesn’t know where to start when it comes to writing/creativity* desires a community of other like-minded women…I made this space for you.Link to full story in my bio and story! #MomLife #ReclaimYourVoice #CreativeGoals #LetsWrite

On Saturday. I gathered with more than 200 sororit On Saturday. I gathered with more than 200 sorority sisters from across 50 years to celebrate our sorority’s anniversary. Minutes before the group photo, a friend of 20+ years looked at me and asked, “Are you wearing two different earrings?!?” I reached up to touch them and… yup, she was right. 🤣 A bunch of us had a good laugh about how I managed to accidentally do that… and then promptly encouraged me to “keep rocking” with them. And that is just one in a million different reasons I love these people. They let me be me, even when I’m ridiculous, and they love me anyway. Chance brought us together, and I’m thankful every day it did! 💖💖#WeekendToRemember #FriendsForLife #Homecoming #Memories

Creativity isn’t linear and neither is my writing Creativity isn’t linear and neither is my writing or editing process. In this week’s video about what I’m working on, I talk juggling multiple creative projects and how I currently avoid shiny object syndrome to make progress with my novels. I always love chatting process, so if you want to talk through your own writing routine, reach out! #LizsWritingJourney #AmEditing #WritingLife #ShinyObjectSyndrome
This week I’m working on edits of my New Adult con This week I’m working on edits of my New Adult contemporary. In one hour today, I almost finished editing the first chapter. The editing process takes SO MUCH patience and feels like a totally different vibe than the drafting stage. When I’m drafting, I easily fall into a flow, and I can see my progress adding up as the word count climbs. I feel energized and excited as I wonder, oooh, what does my character want to do next? When I’m editing, I slow down. I read and reread sentences out loud. I ask myself: Is this really showing the reader what they need to know right now? The energy is more subdued and thoughtful. I love both “modes,” but it definitely feels like switching gears, and I always need to remind myself that while it doesn’t look like I’m making progress (my word count is just about the same as it was this morning), I am… one chapter, one sentence, one word at a time. But it’s also a reminder: thank goodness for the outside feedback from my writing partners. Without their insights, the editing process would take me SO much longer, because they catch things I don’t, simply because I’m too close to the text. So, if you’re looking for a writing partner? Don’t forget I offer writing and editing services for authors, no matter what stage you’re at in the process!#WritingLife #EditingTips #NewAdultBooks #EmbraceTheProcess
There is so much I can say about “what I was up to There is so much I can say about “what I was up to” in September, because I worked on a LOT of creative projects, but the only thing I want to shout from the rooftop is…I TURNED IN MY FINAL DRAFT OF MY YOUNG ADULT HISTORICAL FANTASY TO MY PUBLISHER.Hitting send on a novel that felt like it’s lived inside me for the last 20 years? I was a ball of emotions. This book is nearly ready for the world. ❤️ Advance reader copies will be available in December!I know, deep down, exactly how my 10-year-old self feels about this… she’s so freaking proud. We never gave up.#WritingDreams #CreativeGoals #HistoricalFantasy #AmPublishing
